23 Feb Rain is a Blessing – And So is This New Fashion Brand
Writer: Anathi Mngxekeza
In my mother tongue, IsiXhosa, the word “ayana” means precipitation – a good omen in many cultures across South Africa. Rain symbolises growth, abundance, and renewal. So, when I heard about a fresh new fashion brand called Ayana, opening at malls nationwide through Pepkor Speciality, I couldn’t help but think: this could be the start of something exciting.
From what I’ve seen so far, Ayana’s branding screams confidence. It’s bold, daring, and stylish – exactly what a modern, empowered woman needs in her wardrobe. And beyond the clothes, there’s another layer to this launch: jobs. With Pepkor Holdings Ltd employing nearly 50,000 South Africans, every new store opening brings employment opportunities and fresh prospects for the fashion-forward consumer.

Ayana is stepping into the scene with a clear vision: to make women feel empowered in what they wear. The brand blends trendy silhouettes with a vibrant colour palette while maintaining the affordability and accessibility that its sister brands (like Refinery) are known for. If you love a good Pep Home find, this might be the fashion equivalent you’ve been waiting for!
The global fashion industry is still wrestling with the fast fashion crisis, and Africa has become a dumping ground for excess clothing. But Ayana seems to be carving out a homegrown solution. This reminds me of what I said earlier: “rain is a blessing for our crops.” A shift towards locally relevant fashion, designed with South African women in mind, could be a much-needed refresh for the retail space.
We’re seeing a movement towards more intentional fashion retailing. Brands like Foschini are prioritising locally made products, and while balancing affordability with local manufacturing remains a challenge, there’s hope that as consumers shop more mindfully, this shift will gain momentum.

As someone who adores texture, unique silhouettes, and pieces that offer great cost-per-wear, I’m eager to see where Ayana lands. Here’s hoping that not only will shoppers feel they’re getting their money’s worth, but that this brand brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to South African fashion.
