The Soundtrack to My Exhale: 11 Songs That Carry Me After a Long Workday

Written by: Amanda Mtuli

There’s a special kind of silence that fills the room after a long, demanding workday. It’s not quite peaceful yet — more like an in-between space where your body is still buzzing, but your soul is begging for softness.

In that space, I turn to music.

These songs aren’t just background noise. They’re part of a ritual — a way to shake off the day, reconnect with myself, and let go of the pressure to be productive. Each one feels like a hug, a sigh of relief, a reminder that I’m allowed to slow down and just be.

Here are the songs I return to when I need to exhale, feel good, and feel whole again:

1. Janelle Monáe – I Like That

Janelle’s quiet confidence and poetic defiance make this the perfect “shake-it-off” anthem. “I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs” — she makes the misfit feel magical. After a tough day, this one reminds me that I’m allowed to be different, soft, strong, and unapologetically myself.

2. Alicia Keys ft. Sampha – 3 Hour Drive

There’s a stillness to this song that feels like a deep breath. Alicia and Sampha’s voices wrap around each other in a way that feels like dusk — like driving nowhere in particular with all the time in the world. It’s beautifully slow, and that’s exactly what I need when everything else has been too fast.

3. Kanye West – Moon

Moon feels like floating. Minimal, haunting, and intimate, it lets me leave the heaviness of the day behind. It doesn’t ask me to do or be anything — just to feel. It’s one of the few songs that makes silence feel full.

4. NAO – Orbit

This song is a universe. NAO’s airy vocals and celestial production make Orbit feel like I’m suspended in time. It’s grounding in the most delicate way — a sonic reminder that no matter how much the world spins, I can still find my center.

5. Corinne Bailey Rae – Breathless

Corinne’s voice is comfort personified. Breathless is romantic and tender, and it makes me want to slow dance alone in my living room. On days when I’ve been “on” for too long, this track gently switches me off.

6. Amanda Black – Ndizele Wena

Amanda sings with her soul. Ndizele Wena is rich in emotion and cultural texture — it grounds me. It’s like being held by your grandmother’s hands, reminded of who you are and where you come from. It’s both strength and surrender.

7. Leon Bridges – Why Don’t You Touch Me

This one tugs at the heart in the most beautiful way. Leon’s voice is like velvet pain, and this track captures that ache of distance in love — and maybe in life, too. It’s not always easy to feel things after a numbing day, but this song brings me back to my emotions.

8. Daniel Caesar – Japanese Denim

Smooth, intimate, and quietly luxurious — Japanese Denim feels like slipping into something comfortable after wearing the world all day. It’s a reminder that love (and life) is best when it’s soft and intentional.

9. Yebba – Distance

Yebba has a way of breaking you open and healing you at the same time. Distance is layered, emotional, and raw. It sounds like longing, and somehow, that makes it healing. A song for the moments when silence just isn’t enough.

10. UMI – wish that i could

Fragile and floaty, this track is like a whisper of a lullaby. UMI always brings a sense of spiritual softness, and this song makes me feel like I’m lying under the stars, free to dream and cry and hope — all at once.

11. Anderson .Paak ft. Smokey Robinson – Make It Better

This is the let’s-cook-something-nice-and-vibe song. It’s old-school groove meets new-age soul, and it always puts a smile on my face. Sometimes, joy is the resistance. And this song delivers just that — smooth, nostalgic, and undeniably feel-good.

Let the Music Hold You

These songs don’t fix everything. But they hold me. They allow me to be tired, tender, and still worthy of joy. They remind me that healing doesn’t always come in big breakthroughs — sometimes, it comes in small soundwaves after sunset.

So here’s to the music that catches us when we fall into our couches at the end of a long day. May we always find the songs that feel like home.
