Coding is becoming one of those skills young people can’t afford to ignore

There’s a strange thing happening in the world of work.

Everyone keeps saying young people need to be “future-ready”, but not enough young people are being given real access to the spaces shaping that future.

Coding is one of those spaces.

For some, it sounds intimidating. For others, it still feels like something reserved for people who were good at maths, owned a laptop early, or already knew what “tech” meant before the rest of us caught up.

But coding is not just about becoming a software developer.

It is about understanding how the digital world works. The apps we use, the websites we visit, the platforms we scroll, the tools we use for school, work, business and creativity all come from people who learned how to build with technology.

That makes coding a career skill, a creative skill and, honestly, a confidence skill.

In South Africa, where so many young people are trying to find a way into meaningful work, digital skills matter. They can open doors into industries like software development, gaming, web design, data, artificial intelligence, product development, digital marketing and entrepreneurship.

The challenge is that talent is everywhere, but access is not.

That’s why opportunities like the Code Youth Bootcamp are worth knowing about. This Youth Month, the initiative will host coding workshops in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria for young people who are curious about technology and want a place to start.

Not everyone who attends a coding workshop will end up working in tech, and that’s okay.

Sometimes the point is exposure.

One workshop can help you realise that tech is not as far away as you thought. It can show you that coding is not some mysterious language only “computer people” understand. It can also help you see how your existing interests, whether it’s music, fashion, gaming, content creation or business, can connect to the digital world.

That is the real career lesson here.

You don’t always need to know exactly what you want to become before you start learning. Sometimes you just need to put yourself in rooms where new possibilities can find you.

Applications for the Code Youth Bootcamp are open, with workshops taking place in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria.

Young people interested in applying can register here. The future of work can feel overwhelming, but learning one new skill is a solid place to start.
